Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Join One of The UoN Golf Squads?
BUCS Squad - You must attend trials at the start of the academic year. information about trials can be found on our Instagram page closer to the start of the academic year. If you are unable to attend general trials, a private trial with a member of the committee may be set up depending on your handicap.

Performance Squad - Once trials and BUCS Squad selection have been complete, our 1's Captain and Vice-Captain will decide who from the BUCS Squad will be in the Performance Squad for the year.

Development Squad - Priority access to those who attended trials for the BUCS Squad but were unsuccessful. If there are extra spaces available, these are released to those who did not attend trials. this will be announced on our Instagram Page.

Beginner Sessions -  These sessions are open to all students. Places in sessions are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. More Information on the sign-up process will be released on our Instagram Page.

How do members get to the golf course? is it expensive?
Being an off-campus sport, we can certainly see how transport can be an issue. However, there are many different ways in which our members get to Beeston Fields and our other venues.

Car/Lifts: Not having access to a car is something that many students experience. However, we are all a family here at UoN Golf and we strongly encourage members with cars to help out those who do not. This is a simple process where a lift request is sent to the group chat, and then a member with a car will confirm if there is any space in their car to provide a lift.

Walk: Beeston Fields is a 15-minute walk from University Park campus. Weather-permitting, this is an option that many first-year students take up.

Bus/Tram: Nottingham has a great public transport network and there is great access to Beeston Fields. The local bus stop is a 5-minute walk, and the local tram stop is a 15-minute walk away.

Taxi: Nottingham has many taxi services available to residents, including; Uber, Bolt and DG Cars. Whilst at first glance it seems an expensive option, we encourage members to share taxis, therefore reducing the price per person.
What handicap do I need to be to play golf?
We cater for all standards of golfers here at UoN Golf.

Our Beginner Sessions offer a platform for you to gain the relevant skills and knowledge to head out onto the golf course. They are great for complete beginners or those who have played a little bit of golf but are not confident enough to take on the challenge of the golf course.

For more competent golfers we have our BUCS Squad and Development squad. These squads connect you with other golfers of similar standards to allow you to play golf during your time at university. The entry standard of each squad will differ from year-to-year, but a rough estimate of required handicaps are:

BUCS Squad:
+6 - 16
Development Squad: 16+

What is BUCS and how many matches do the BUCS Squad play?
The British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) governing body oversee all 52 competitive sports that are played in British Universities and Colleges.

Our 3 teams compete in each of the 3 tiers of league golf, providing you with a great opportunity to play competitive golf during your time at university. The number of matches played depends on the size of each league, for the 2022/23 season we predict:

1's - Matches
2's - 18 Matches
3's - 18 Matches
